TRACTION | Forthcoming:
PRIME | will be a discussion about matriarchal power, ageing and ageism in the arts, with mature artists discussing their lived experience.
GAIN
TRACTION is a four-part discussion series that will examine ideas of modification and renewal within creative practice, the needs for upholding artist’s rights, the power of mature knowledge, and new modes of education and exchange.
Under the umbrella title of TRACTION, BLINDSIDE will present four artist-focused professional development online presentations: PIVOT, ACCUMULATE, GAIN and PRIME.
Conversation #3 in the series, GAIN, explores what a visual arts union in Australia would look like, the push toward a more equitable visual arts sector, and why collective action is pivotal to this process.
Stephen Palmer is an artist and writer living on Wurundjeri Country. He was a member of Artists’ Committee, was a co-facilitator of Light Projects ARI, and is currently a member of the Artists’ Union working group.
Madeleine Thornton-Smith has training in painting and ceramics. She uses remediation as a method of challenging archetypal forms and medium specificity: the location in which one medium ends, and another begins. Madeleine is a member of the Artists’ Union working group and also works as a disability support worker and tutor.
Chloé Hazelwood is an arts manager, writer and curator. She is currently Chair, Board of Directors at BLINDSIDE. Chloé has written exhibition essays for a number of artist-run spaces, such as BLINDSIDE, SEVENTH Gallery, Bus Projects and Firstdraft. Her research interests include collective action in the arts, First Nations cultural expression and the queering of institutions. Chloé has curated exhibitions at Verge Gallery, Cold Cuts and RMIT University. She has moderated panels at RMIT University and Schoolhouse Studios. Chloé recently completed the Master of Arts Management (with Distinction) at RMIT University and was a member of the inaugural 2019 First Site Committee, where she coordinated a dynamic range of public programs and events for students and the wider community. Chloé also works as the Volunteer Officer at Linden New Art.
