APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN | REGIONAL ART + RESEARCH RESIDENCIES at MOORAMONG 2021

Applications are now open for the annual Regional Art + Research Residencies, supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and the City of Melbourne. BLINDSIDE is pleased to partner with the National Trust to facilitate the Mooramong Art + Research Residency and invites applications from two Melbourne- based artists and two artists based in regional Victoria to undertake residencies together, respond to the site and perhaps collaborate in some way.

The residency is open to people working in all fields of creative practice including writing, sound, film, movement, drawing and to bring distinct, contemporary and creative voices to a heritage site and to support the development of new work and thinking.

Residency period: Monday 13 September - Sunday 3 October, 2021.

Residencies are artist-driven, and will take place at Mooramong, a working farm of 4,000 acres that was owned by horse racing magnet Donald ‘Scobie’ Mackinnon who remodelled it in 1938 for his movie star wife Claire Adams.

Mororamong is located in the Western District off the Glenelg Highway at 635 Mooramong Road in Skipton, Victoria. Situated on lands of the Wadawurrung, the stony rises site located at Mooramong is of significance to the Wadawurrung group. The estate also incorporates an airstrip and the Mackinnon Nature Reserve (approximately 600 acres) which is home to the endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot and other Australian species including the Wedge-Tailed Eagle and Brolga.

The colonial history, architectural flavour, working farm and nature reserve offer a myriad of possibilities for tangential artistic engagement. BLINDSIDE and the National Trust are particularly interested in projects and research surrounding issues of conservation, sustainability, settlement histories and pre-colonial histories specific to the site.

Within this multi-dimensional setting, artists develop a body of work or a site responsive project, or simply undergo a period of structured and intensive research to grow creatively. At the close of the residency period artists are required to create a residency report and share research findings / creative outcomes via online platforms.

Artists are required to submit an application that outlines their proposed residency project. Please keep in mind that proposals may present a framework for residency activity and possible outcomes, but do not need to be fully resolved as projects may shift and develop during the residency engagement.

The successful applicants will receive:

  • A stipend of $2000 per artist. This fee includes delivery of a public-facing outcome and residency report.

  • Accommodation in two, three bedroom renovated overseers cottages adjacent to the heritage-listed mansion

  • Limited access to local caretakers, archivists and naturalists by appointment

  • Feedback on the development of the project

  • Marketing and promotional support

Please note: Each artist must have their own transport as the property is not easily accessed by public transport. Resident artists must be available to attend induction at beginning of residency period and be onsite for at least 15 days of the three week residency period.
