WHAT WILL I DO NOW, WITH MY HANDS?

What will I do now, with my hands? reflects on the numerous artists participating in SOAP’s curation of BLINDSIDE Curtain Call who no longer self-identify as an artist. It questions what it means to have been an artist, a maker, a creative person and for there to have been a poetic turning away from being an artist. Reading the correspondence between SOAP and artists who exhibited at BLINDSIDE in the 2000s, the video comments on the lapse or gap in shared collective memory. The work broadly asks who the artists were then and questions what is lost through the fallibility of memory and time. 

Beth Caird graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Photography) Honours from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2014. She has exhibited in multiple solo and group exhibitions, including: The Bureau of Writing at the 20th Biennale of Sydney (2016); Rules for Leaving a Small Town, West Space (2014); Painting, Photography, Film TCB (2015); Soap Collective, Fort Delta (2015); and Some of them got the first look, Kings ARI (2015). As a writer and editor, her work has appeared in various publications including: Interview with Patrick Staff, un Magazine 9.2 (2015); sub-editor with Aodhan Madden for un Magazine 9.1 and 9.2 (2015); Remembering Knight Street: Selected Stories (2015); No Lights No Literature, and Outrage and Anachronism, Dissect Journal (2013). Beth recently returned from a residency at The Physics Room Gallery and is a current Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artist.
